JP's Constituent Letter

Dear Constituent,

Greetings from Montana’s Capitol! I’m writing with news from the 61st Montana   Legislature! The 2009 session is going well, and I’ve introduced bills to protect our personal information, prevent identity theft, allow donation of cancer drugs, protect firefighters, use our natural resources responsibly, and more.

The work of the legislature is fast-paced, intense, and fascinating. I’m constantly aware that these aren’t theoretical discussions, but proposals for state law by which each of us will live. It’s about deciding what we can do for most Montanans, and what’s fair and most effective. Be assured I am doing my best to make sure Montana weathers this economic storm and comes out for the better.

I’ve been appointed to serve on excellent committees. I serve on the House Taxation Committee, where I’ve supported property tax relief and income tax relief, business tax relief, savings plans for college, and energy audits of homes and state buildings. I also serve as Vice Chair on the House Natural Resources Committee and on the House Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Committee. These committees consider issues important to Montana: those of our natural resources, wildlife, and public lands. I’ve voted to protect water rights, and I’m sponsoring legislation to manage our natural resources and property rights.

I have further information after the jump.

What JP's race meant: Two stories in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle and Billings Gazette
Billings Gazette: House likely to be split 50-50
The final count in the House came down to House District 63 in Bozeman, where Rep. J.P. Pomnichowski, D-Bozeman, held onto her seat by 230 votes out of 6,660 cast.
The result wasn't known until late Wednesday because of vote-counting problems
in Gallatin County.

Bozeman Daily Chronicle:

Pomnichowski win gives Dems control of House
After word that Pomnichowski had won, a spokesman for the Montana
Democratic Party said that meant Republicans would no longer control the House.

JP's Letter to the Editor

Please support me in House District 63
Hi. I’m JP Pomnichowski, running for re-election to the Montana Legislature.

The policy work of enacting state law is so important for Montanans and Montana businesses, and I’m proud to have co-written and co-sponsored laws with Republican and Democratic representatives alike. For me, the work of making good state law comes first, not party politics.
I worked hard in the Legislature for Montana businesses and hard-working Montanans. I voted to eliminate the business equipment tax, and I was the one Democrat appointed by the Speaker of the House to a special committee to eliminate the business equipment tax.

In the last session, I voted
To expand Insure Montana, for small businesses to pool together to buy group health insurance for their employees, and to expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program.  For property tax relief for Montana homeowners, amounting to $8.8 million in Gallatin County alone.
For outdoor enthusiasts, I passed four laws, including easier permits for disabled hunters and for Purple Heart recipients to hunt and fish free.
For more K-12 school funding, to freeze tuition at Montana universities for the first time in 20 years, and
for $28 million to renovate MSU’s Gaines Hall. I voted to make the state retirement systems fiscally sound, which improved Montana’s credit rating for first time in 26 years n For . $1.68 million to clean up asbestos and other contaminants at the new Bozeman Public Library.
I worked hard for you in the state Legislature during the last session, and if re-elected, I promise to work just as hard again. It is an honor to represent you. I’d appreciate your vote in this election. Vote Pomnichowski, the longest name on the ballot.

    Rep. JP Pomnichowski,

Letter to the Editor Bozeman Daily Chronicle (11/2/08) Ann Drenk:

Join me in re-electing Pomnichowski to HD63
Jennifer "JP" Pomnichowski served with distinction during her first term as representative from HD 63, and we should all be grateful to her for choosing to seek a second term.

As a retired public health nurse in Gallatin County, I am always interested in the issue of maternal/child health care, as well as air and water quality and environmental health. JP’s vision encompasses not only these issues, but also educa
tion, taxes, fiscal responsibility and other concerns important to our state. JP is a fifthgeneration Montanan whose remarkable work ethic is demonstrated in her research of issues, her perseverance, and thoughtful consideration and deliberation. Her equanimity, listening skills, and positive attitude enable her to work with others in a highly effective manner.
Voters in Gallatin County are poised to send the highest quality Democratic legislators to Helena this year; excellent not just because of their experience and party affiliation, but because they are committed to working together and across party lines for what is truly in the best interests of our state. This is a delegation of whom we can be truly proud, especially with Rep. Pomnichowski in their midst. JP has the experience, the skills, the attitude and the personal characteristics that
will be needed and welcomed in our next Legislature.
Neighbors, please join me in re-electing JP for HD 63.

Letter to the Editor 11/2/08 Bozeman Daily Chronicle Glenda Howze:

Pomnichowski a huge asset to Gallatin County
As this election cycle is drawing to a close, it is important for all voters to take a good hard look at the box they will mark on Nov. 4 for any number of issues and people.
One box that voters will want to be sure to check, if you reside in her House District, is for JP Pomnichowski. JP has served not only those that reside in her district well, but all those that live in Gallatin County and Montana.
In my line of work we have call to work closely with the legislators. JP was one of the very few in the last session that actually took time to listen to the opinions and needs of local government before making decisions and when working to promote or speak out against various pieces of legislation. In the interim between the last session and the upcoming one, JP has remained active, working closely with elected officials and the public to ensure that she was educated on the needs and responding to them accordingly.
JP is a huge asset to Gallatin County in our Legislature, a vote for her will mean that your voice on issues here at home is also heard in Helena.

Pomnichowski a problem solve

I already voted. Thank you to those who made early voting possible. Those who know me will not be surprised that I voted for Democrats. "When I retire I'll fish all the time and vote against everything," I said. Now, here I am, fishing less than planned and voting for progress.
All you "undecideds" out there, please vote for candidates who will support education (including the six mill levy), who will support stream access and protect water quality, and encourage energy alternatives.
I urge you to vote for Rep. JP Pomnichowski, not because I can pronounce her name correctly but because of her record. I would have voted for her if she was a Republican. Why? Because she is a problem
solver. She is focused more on problems than on party. Her personality makes it possible to work across the aisle. We really need that. The aisle was more like a wall last session.

J.P Pomnichowski a 'good gal', the wisest choice
Tammy Hall recently wrote about "good guys" who run for office. Well in Montana there are a lot of "good gals" running as well. The people in House District 63 have one serving them. Let’s hope voters have the good sense to send Jennifer Pomnichowski back to Helena
in November. The fact that JP is a fine human being is only slightly relevant to the situation. Just being nice doesn’t equip anyone for the daunting task of assessing the needs of a constituency and then thoughtfully responding. No small task. JP has a governing track record for a freshman that deserves applause. JP passed seven bills, the second highest number of any freshman lawmaker.

JP's Vote smart Page

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle on 9/16/08 posted an editorial about candidates filling out the vote smart questionaire.

Here's some of what they said:

Project Vote Smart has a proven track record of non-partisan objectivity. The questions are not loaded; they are not crafted to trap the candidates. Check it out for yourself on the Web site. The questionnaire is simply designed to elicit accurate information about the candidates’ positions.
And a candidate worthy of our support owes us at least that much

Note: JP's opponent did not fill out the Vote Smart questionaire.

Send J.P back to state Legislature

When I was young, my father once gave me some insight into state legislation in Idaho in the 1930s, where we once lived. He told me that a person in our church who was a state legislator had run for the office only so that he might affect legislation appropriate for the trucking industry, as he was the co-owner of a large interstate trucking firm. This person was willing to trade votes on any issue as long as it achieved the desired ends for trucking. School funding or issues of public health or safety were of no concern to him. I was surprised and disappointed.
